Roche Innovation Center Shanghai (RICS)
Roche Innovation Center Shanghai (Roche R&D Center (China) Ltd.) was established in 2004. This is the first fully owned multinational pharmaceutical R&D center in Shanghai and the first Roche R&D center in emergent markets. This center is located in the Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park in Shanghai and currently has about 150 scientists performing drug discovery and development work.
Over the years, the center has made many contributions to Roche innovation. China-discovered drug candidates have entered into development in multiple disease areas. By December 31st 2016, 176 patent applications were filed for the inventions originated from RICS, among which 81 patents were granted in China, Europe, the US or Japan. With the strong support from global colleagues, the center has earned the respect from peer companies and local government authorities as a biopharma innovation leader in China.
RICS has now evolved into an integral part of Roche Pharma Research and Early Development organization (pRED) Immunology, Inflammation and Infectious Diseases Discovery and Translational Area (I3 DTA). Hepatitis B, multi-drug resistant bacterial infection and immune-mediated diseases are now the major focus for the center. In addition, RICS collaborates with many renowned external academic institutes, biotech companies and contract research organizations within and outside of China. We will continue to establish and maintain a broad alliance network locally and globally to drive the drug development and translational medicine activities in China.
Roche Innovation Center Shanghai New Laboratory Project was kicked off in 2015. The project has an investment of RMB 863 million and covers 14,000 square meters with 220 modular work areas. The new investment once again demonstrates Roche’s long-term commitment to Innovation and to Chinese patients.
